about
odp

We are a civil association that works with communities, social and international organizations and foundations, researchers and universities, governments and companies with the purpose of building synergies for the strenghtening of institutional capacities in the most conflictive and vulnerable regions of Mexico.

At ODP We believe that development depends on the existence of institutions that include, defend and promote the interests of the social majority, defined in processes of inclusion and social participation. In order to build and strengthen these institutions, ODP supports citizens, particularly in the most vulnerable and isolated communities, to identify, prioritize and manage their development agenda in a sustainable way, and develop instruments of voice and accountability. At the same time ODP helps the public sector to build mechanisms that foster participatory governance and works with the private sector to build synergies and align the interests of all relevant stakeholders.

Understanding that the solutions generated by the local population have greater impact and sustainability,ODP looks forward to help communities, especially those with higher levels of poverty and social unrest, on their path to development.

To this end, for nearly 20 years we have created, operated and perfected an intervention model that is based on the establishment of a Network of Social Promoters, which identifies, agrees and prioritizes social demand in any municipality in the country, and the channels to the institutions of the three levels of government, building social capital, articulating strategic responses to environmental problems among actors from the institutional, academic, social and private spheres, and promoting investment for development.

We work under a participatory methodology, which privileges the identification of opportunities, the appropriation of projects by the community, the empowerment of the population, social cohesion and inclusion and the strengthening of institutional capacities.

This Network has been successfully deployed in the most conflictive regions of the country, including, among many others, the following places:

  • Sierra Tarahumara (Chihuahua, Durango and Sinaloa)
  • Sierra Madre Occidental (Durango, Sinaloa, Nayarit)
  • Tierra Caliente (Michoacán and Guerrero)
  • Tamaulipas and the North of Veracruz
  • South of Veracruz, Tabasco and Campeche
  • Huasteca (Chicontepec and surroundings in Hidalgo, San Luis Potosí and Veracruz
  • Lacandona jungle
  • Sierra Sur, Isthmus of Tehuantepec
